Student Debt Reform

The student debt crisis is burdening hard-working families and holding back NC’s economy.

North Carolina adults of all ages owe $48 billion in student loan debt, which tripled over a decade. Most of those carrying these unprecedented levels of student debt struggle to make their payments. They have less savings for retirement, put off buying a car or home, and delay starting families. Student debt acutely impacts borrowers of color, rural borrowers, women borrowers, and low-income borrowers.

Sloppy and harmful practices by the companies that service student loans make the problem worse. States are stepping in to hold these servicers accountable and demand fair treatment of student borrowers. The Coalition for Responsible Lending supports the Student Borrowers’ Bill of Rights and other policies that protect borrowers and relieve North Carolinians of debilitating student loan debt.

  • While pursuing higher education is still a pathway to higher incomes over a person’s lifetime, student loan debt threatens to undermine this promise. Outstanding student loan amounts have risen at an alarming rate over the past decade, and North Carolina has not been immune from this trend. Today, students and their families face a difficult decision: take on substantial debt to fill the gap between ballooning college costs and reduced grant support or forgo a college education in the face of a labor market that increasingly demands credentials and degrees. The impact of this choice is particularly severe for some populations: communities of color, rural and low-income communities, veterans and service members, women, and older Americans.
